Monster Morale
While a few monsters (such as mindless creatures) are fearless and will fight to the death, most monsters have a strong desire to survive and will not continue to fight when the battle is going against them. They will instead seek to retreat, to flee, or even to surrender. The referee decides when monsters abandon the battle and retreat, based on the situation and the monster’s intelligence. Monsters are assigned a Morale Rating (from 2 to 12, with 2 being a complete coward and 12 being totally fearless) to help the referee make these decisions. If the referee wishes, he may simply roll 2d6 and have the monsters break off combat if the number rolled is greater than the monster’s Morale Rating.
